Should I raise my child as a vegetarian?

My wife and I are about to have our first! We both became vegetarian about six years ago together. Neither of us were raised vegetarian, though. Maintaining our lifestyle is really important to us moving forward, but we’re worried that it won’t provide our child with enough of the nutrients she’ll need. Is there anything we should know about raising a child vegetarian?

Raising children vegetarian can absolutely be done! The main areas you need to make sure you fulfill are iron, protein, and zinc. You got lucky and you’re raising your child at a time when there are so many options available for vegetarian families. It’s much easier now than it was 20 or even 10 years ago! 0 Likes

If you and your wife are meticulous enough to make a meal plan for your child that includes all of the healthy things they need to grow, I don’t see why not. I would be cautious of what may happen when your child is with others. Kids trade food at school, want to try new things, and I would have some sort of a plan of what you want to do in case your kiddo ends up wanting to try foods outside of your family’s vegetarian diet. Planning, planning, planning is key! 0 Likes

I should probably be billed extra for the advice I seek through my children's pediatrician. I run everything through her. I would seek the assistance of your pediatrician and detail meal options to ensure you are providing your child with the proper daily nutrition needed. I'm glad you are considering this for your child. We have to be more mindful of what we put into our bodies and understand the emotional, mental and physical benefits of eating right. 0 Likes
