SLEEPING

When should my infant son start sleeping through the night?

When is it normal for a baby to start consistently sleeping through the night? I've heard at 6 months or even younger, but my 8-month-old son hardly ever does. What's wrong?

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong - trouble with sleeping through the night is still pretty common at that age. One issue may be that you haven’t fully weaned him off of your presence. Do you rush in to soothe him each time he wakes or cries? If so, try to wait it out, or only stay a few moments and see if he’s able to get himself back to sleep. Is he awake and trying to crawl, play and talk? This is just a result of his progress and development - while it’s great that he’s curious and active, try to discourage the habit of playing or allowing too much activity at night so he learns that it’s only time to sleep. 0 Likes

Are you still feeding several times each night? At this age, he can be weaned off - many infants don’t require this beyond six months. Also, if you live in a noisy neighborhood or apartment complex, outside noise may be a factor. Try using a white noise machine or app in his room. These can be a game changer for many parents. If he nears closer to 12 months without improving, talk with your pediatrician to see what they recommend and to ensure there are no other causes behind the issue. 0 Likes

I think that it is a normal thing. You have to look for few factors about that. See whether the baby is hungry, check the diaper, check whether the baby is feeling cold or hot. Normally if the enviornment is little noisy babies used to react fast. If all these factors are consideted and fulfilled by you I thing that it is better to consult a paediatrician . 0 Likes

There is nothing wrong, you made need to make some adjustments to his schedule. When does he get up how early does he take a nap during the day, are you allowing for activities that will tire him out. when is dinner, wha is his bed time and does he get a bath at night. All these things can play into his sleep pattern. 0 Likes

Babies will start sleeping threw the night around 6 months. Why because they are eating more solid foods at this age. When the baby is hungry generally is why they wake up. 0 Likes
