Profile

About me:
I am currently a student at Austin Community college majoring in Sociology. I love animals, my favorites are large sized dogs. I have 4 full siblings as well as 4 half siblings. I do currently work as a fine dining server with a set schedule. However, if I meet a family who is a great match for my current needs, I could leave my current job and start nannying full time.

My experience in childcare:
I realized that I enjoyed working with children when I was 13. My mom was the head teacher at a tutoring center and I would commonly spend time there helping in any way I could. My freshman year of high school, one of my neighbors offered me a position tutoring their son (age 8) in reading/writing. He was a very smart kid and did great in math, but his dyslexia made it harder for him to keep up in reading/writing. I continued tutoring him for 2 school years 3 times a week. When I turned 16 I wanted to try working in the food industry, during this time I was not doing any form of childcare. Until summer of 2019, one of my moms friends posted on facebook looking for a nanny for her 2 kids (age 4 girl and age 6 boy at the time). During the summer, I watched them 5 days a week from 9am-6pm. I watched them at their house, but we often went to do things to ensure they had a very fun summer. (Most commonly rode bikes, went to a pond to feed ducks, a few different parks nearby, sometimes indoor activities such as chuckecheese, kidmania, movie theaters, etc.). When they started school, I work pick them up from school 3 or 4 out of the days every week and sometimes watch them on Saturdays. I would help them with their homework when needed. If they seemed to have a hard day at school, I would take them to get ice cream and it would immediately lighten their mood. When covid hit I was at their house Mon-Fri 7am-5pm. They would be on zoom calls with their teachers and I was making sure they were doing their work and helping when needed. Once they returned to school, I went back to my prior schedule. However, the kids mom asked if I would be interested in watching the neighbors kids while I watched her kids. The neighbor had 2 kids, same ages as theirs. I continued babysitting all 4 of the kids until December 2021 when I moved to Austin. Sometimes recently the kids Facetime call me. Watching these 2 kids grow had a huge affect on me and I still kind of think of them as my younger siblings. I also used to volunteer in the "crawlers" room (babies 12m-24m) at my church. Usually about twice a month.

(The boy in the family I nannied for the longest is diagnosed with Autism. Upon spending a lot of time with him I learned what his triggers are and things that can help avoid them. I also learned some things that helped calm him down when he got overwhelmed such as his favorite song. I learned that getting upset at him during an episode only made things more stressful for him. So although sometimes he would throw things at me or his sister, I would try to talk him through everything. Usually when this happened it would scare his younger sister, so I would stay very close to her and make sure she did not get hurt. Once he would start calming down, I would talk to him and explain that I don't like him any less and that I understand that it can feel like he can't control it but remind him of strategies that helped when he started to feel himself getting angry. Although there were a few times that I was left bleeding and with bruises, I always understood that he didn't actually want to hurt me and I never cared for him any less because of these incidents. I am only sharing this information so parents of kids who have Autism know that I have experience and will not become frightened if their child has an episode. )
(Over this time span 2015-2021, there were multiple occasions where I have done temporary babysitting jobs for families with children ranging in age 2 through 14. Sometimes overnight. My availability could potentially change to suit your needs.)
